Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship (P.S.H.E.&C.)
St Stephen’s aims to ensure that all children develop an understanding of the ever-changing world in which we live. Through a comprehensive, spiral curriculum that encourages critical thinking, we aim to build confident individuals that have the power to have a positive impact on our future world. We aim to instill the skills necessary to take an active role in their local, national and global community, including having respect for all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or social background. We want our children to be physically and mentally healthy and feel safe in school, their personal relationships and in the wider world and equip them with the skills to know where and when to go for help and how to seek such help.
These personal and social skills and attitudes underpin our whole-school ethos. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class and school councils, fundraising events, supporting charities and involvement in community activities. We encourage children to foster pastoral relationships between year groups, for example reading with younger peers.
Relationships and Sex Education in KS2
Parents, teachers and governors have developed a comprehensive relationships and sex education programme. It is taught through PSHE&C and Science, in the context of family life, loving relationships and respect for others. The school policy is available to parents, who are invited to view teaching materials prior to the start of the programme of study. Parents are also given the opportunity to evaluate the teaching programme afterwards, as constructive feedback is always welcome and is used to inform future lessons.
The course takes account of all children’s needs; however we respect parents’ rights to withdraw their children from those parts of the programme not included in the statutory National Curriculum.
Anti-Bullying
We take bullying seriously at St Stephen's and take part in the nationwide annual Anti-Bullying week. Here is an uplifting video from some Year Four girls who were inspired to write an anti-bullying poem.
